Description

The Nankai Building was completed in 1932 as an annex to Nankai Namba Station, which opened in December 1885. With Takashimaya department store’s Osaka location as its core store, the building faces Midosuji Boulevard, the “main street” of Osaka City, and has eight steel-reinforced-concrete floors and two basement floors. The exterior of the building has no corners, and the wall design is composed of a series of arches and Corinthian-style wall columns with decorative vases. The exterior of the building is covered with terracotta (unglazed decorative ceramic), and it still stands proudly today. Additionally, mosaic art depicting “festivals along the Nankai Line” was installed in murals under the front eaves during the renovation work that took place from 1972 to 1980. The area around the main entrance to the building is also instantly recognizable to people who live in the Kansai region, as it appears in live images at the beginning of local news broadcasts, and on-the-street interviews are often conducted there. It is a landmark of Osaka Minami , and since its completion it has been a popular location with men and women of all ages.
